Austin-Bergstrom International Airport

The Austin vibe is felt as soon as one enters Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS). From the aroma of freshly smoked barbecue to the sounds of live, local music, the senses confirm that this is an airport like no other. The uniqueness of Austin is reflected throughout the airport’s landscape, art, shops and restaurants. Local musicians perform 11 live shows a week in the terminal. And it doesn’t end there. Austin-Bergstrom strives for excellence in customer service and the results have been recognized. Austin-Bergstrom is only the third airport in the world to earn Airports Council International’s Airport Service Quality seal of approval.

Austin-Bergstrom is owned and operated by the City of Austin. Celebrating 10 years of service to Central Texas, Austin-Bergstrom is a successful conversion of an Air Force Base to commercial airport. Nine airlines provide 258 commercial flights a day, including service to 36 non-stop destinations. The airport features two parallel runways, 12,250 feet and 9,000 feet in length. The Barbara Jordan Terminal contains 25 gates with room for future growth. Expansion of the airport’s existing Remain Overnight (RON) apron is scheduled to begin this fall, providing 13 additional spaces for a total of 39 in 2011.

As a result of incidents involving employees at who used their identification badges to access secure areas to smuggle weapons aboard aircraft, the Government Accountability Office was asked by Congress to examine the programs TSA implemented to strengthen airport security. The report indicates that while TSA has taken steps to increase airport security, it has not conducted vulnerability assessments at 87 percent of airports in the US. Airline On-Time Performance Improved in August

The nation's largest airlines had a higher on-time performance rate in August 2009 than both July 2009 and August 2008, according to the Air Travel Consumer Report released on Oct. 6 by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT).

According to information filed with the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, the 19 carriers reporting on-time performance recorded an overall on-time arrival rate of 79.7 percent in August, better than both the 78.4 percent on-time rate of August 2008 and July 2009's 77.6 percent.

The monthly report also includes data on lengthy tarmac delays, flight cancellations and the causes of flight delays by the reporting carriers, as well as reports of mishandled baggage filed with the carriers, and consumer service, disability and discrimination complaints received by DOT's Aviation Consumer Protection Division. This report also includes reports of incidents involving pets traveling by air, as required to be filed by U.S. carriers.
