Growth Prompts Moncton Airport Expansion Project

MONCTON, N.B. – May 6 – Starting today, passengers visiting the Greater Moncton International Airport (GMIA) will see some construction activity in the terminal building. The pre-board security screening area will be expanded to accommodate one extra screening line bringing the total available checkpoints to three. The project is expected to be completed by the end of June.

Continuous growth since the new terminal opened its doors in 2002, coupled with record passenger traffic in 2008, is prompting the implementation of this construction project. In fact, the 10.6% passenger traffic increase in 2008 means that more travellers are cueing at the pre-board screening checkpoint at peak times. The impact on passenger flow is expected to be minimal; but as available lines may become limited throughout the project, we recommend that departing travellers arrive a few minutes earlier than usual.

“We’ve been working closely with the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA), the body responsible for pre-board screening at Canadian airports, to ensure we are meeting their requirements at the GMIA”, states Rob Robichaud, President and CEO, of the Greater Moncton International Airport Authority. “Passenger traffic has grown by over 182,000 passengers (46%) since 2002, thus making this much needed expansion a key component to ensuring good customer service into the future.”

The design work was awarded to Architects Four, the same firm that designed the award-winning air terminal building completed in 2002, and Acadian Construction will oversee the project.
