San Diego Authorizes 2 Design-Build Contracts for the Terminal Projects
SAN DIEGO – April 2, 2009 – The San Diego County Regional Airport Authority Board today voted to authorize the execution of two design-build contracts for the implementation of the Terminal Development Program (TDP). One contract is with Turner/PLC/FCI Joint Venture for the Terminal 2 West building and airside expansion at San Diego International Airport. The other contract is with Kiewit/Sundt Joint Venture for the construction of a second-level departure roadway in front of Terminal 2 and landside improvements.
With today’s Board action, approval was received to have the Turner/PLC/FCI team prepare conceptual terminal designs and develop a cost estimate and schedule for the terminal expansion and airside improvements. This preliminary work is not to exceed $14 million. The Kiewit/Sundt Joint Venture team will prepare conceptual second-level departure roadway designs and landside reconfiguration and also develop a cost estimate and schedule for this work at a cost not to exceed $11 million. It is anticipated that the work of the two contract teams will be reported at the July 2, 2009, Board meeting.
The preliminary cost estimate for the entire TDP is approximately $877 million. This figure is expected to be refined once the aforementioned work by the contractors is completed.
Implementation of the TDP near-term improvements will position the airport to continue to compete successfully for improved air service and continue providing world class facilities for the benefit of the flying public and the region.
Elements of the TDP include:
-
10 new jet gates at Terminal 2 West
-
Overnight aircraft parking on the south-side of the airfield
-
Taxiway improvements to accommodate aircraft movements to new gates
-
Dual-level roadway separating departing and arriving passengers
-
Curbside check-in allowing departing passengers to check their baggage and pick up boarding passes before entering the terminal
-
Reconfiguration of transit plaza and surface parking lot
-
Relocation of USO facilities
The entire TDP is expected to be completed in late 2012 or early 2013.
