Visual Paging System Installed in Des Moines

DES MOINES - Jan. 30 - Des Moines International Airport (DSM) officials are pleased to announce the installation of a $1.1 million paging system that incorporates cutting-edge technology. The system, developed by Com Net Software, allows the Airport to now offer visual paging. Visual paging provides the same message visually that people hear audibly. This makes the Airport ADA-compliant for public paging.

“I am pleased to see the Airport addressing the needs of all its travelers. Hearing-impaired travelers often get frustrated because most airports provide very limited information visually,” said Kathryn Baumann-Reese, an Administrator with the Deaf Services Commission of Iowa.

The new system also continually monitors ambient noise and automatically adjusts the volume levels of the speakers. Individual announcements can be isolated to certain areas of the terminal and airline gate announcements can be customized by the touch of a few buttons.

DSM Airport chief technology Officer Bill Konkol says, “Our goal was to update our paging system to provide better sound quality while meeting the increasing TSA requirements for passenger security messages. With the new airport paging system, the airport can create, and deliver safety and security messages with a few key strokes. The messages provided are a clear digital sound for hearing and are easy to see on LCD screens for the hearing impaired.”
