Media Relations Working Group Update

With a goal toward strengthening communication among the Marketing and Communications Committee members and the ACI-NA Board, the Media Relations Working Group is charged with creating and encouraging messaging that supports the actions, values and issues of the airport community. Specifically, the working group focuses on:

  •  Coordinating messaging across airports that ensures a consistent voice for airports;
  •  Developing programs to encourage well-rounded media coverage of airports;
  •  Facilitating access and cooperation of public information programs among aviation groups, federal agencies, and corporate entities.

The Media Relations Working Group has two major projects – , the ACI-NA Excellence in Airport Marketing & Communications Contest and the biennial media relations seminar.

Because participation has been hampered in recent years, the communications contest will be revised in 2012 in hopes of drawing more airport participants. A task force of the working group has reviewed the Call for Entries form, last revised in 2008, for category relevance and clarity. Additionally, it was decided to move the entry deadline from the traditional June 30 deadline to March.

Beginning next June in Sacramento, the winners of the ACI-NA Excellence in Airport Marketing & Communications Contest will be honored at a luncheon during the annual Marketing and Communications Conference. Adopting a practice used by the Commercial Management Committee’s Concessions Contest, the winners of the Peggy G. Hereford Award as well as the category awards will not be announced in advance. All 50-plus award winners will be recognized at the ceremony. The 2012 Call for Entries will be issued in January.

The 2012 Media Relations Seminar will be held in Long Beach, Jan. 25-27, at the Hyatt-Long Beach. This seminar offers information on the latest media trends and tools for effective crisis communication. Participants will not only have the opportunity to network with peers and share valuable tips on best practices for media relations, but will also hear from expert communications professionals on how to better market your airport’s message in the local and national press through new and traditional media channels.

Dec. 30 is the deadline for a discounted registration fee and the group discount of $169 a night at the Hyatt Regency Long Beach. Call the hotel directly at (562) 491-1234 to reserve your roomtoday.

In addition to planning the biennial media relations seminar, the Media Relations Working Group has also developed an action plan to tackle the challenge: How should airports make best, most productive use of new media/online communications/all things digital. The working group has begun work on a social media “inventory” and best practices survey to begin to meet this challenge. Work will continue on this project into next year.
