Communications Contest Moving to Spring Awards

The ACI-NA Excellence in Airport Marketing & Communications Contest will be revised in 2012 in hopes of drawing more airport participants.

Beginning next June in Sacramento, the winners of the contest will be honored at a luncheon during the annual Marketing and Communications Conference. Adopting a practice used by the Commercial Management Committee’s Concessions Contest, the winners of the Peggy G. Hereford Award as well as the category awards will not be announced in advance. All 50-plus award winners will be recognized at the ceremony.

To facilitate the shift in the awards ceremony, the Steering Group of the Marketing and Communications Committee meeting in San Diego decided to move the entry deadline from the traditional June 30 deadline to March. Participation in the contest has been hampered in recent years by the limited time between a late June date for the conference and the entry deadline.

A Steering Group task force -- Richard Walsh, Boston; Justin Meyer, Kansas City; Krista Kealey, Ottawa; Bruce Schedlbaur, Grand Rapids; and Susan Goyette, HMS Host -- will review the Call for Entries, last revised in 2008, for category relevance and clarity of instructions. The task force is to make its recommendations by the Dec. 14 meeting of the Steering Group. The 2012 Call for Entries will be issued in January. Because the contest entry period for 2012 will only be nine months, the task force may reduce the number of categories for 2012.

The Steering Group voiced support for the decision to move the contest online. Fifty percent of the 2011 judges were outside of the Washington area. To expand the judging pool, participating airports will be asked to reach out to the local chapters of PRSA and similar groups.

The task force welcomes suggestions on revisions to the Call for Entries. If you have ideas, contact ACI-NA’s Morgan Dye or one of the task force members directly.
