Commissioners Honor Senate Majority Leader Reid

WASHINGTON — Airports Council International - North America (ACI-NA) today honored Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) with the 2011 Commissioners Congressional Leadership Award for his ongoing support of the aviation industry.

Senator Reid was first elected to the United States Senate in 1988 and re-elected in 1992, 1998, 2004 and 2010. He has served as the chairman or senior Democratic member on several important committees and subcommittees. It was in large part due to the Senator’s efforts that Congress approved a two year of exemption of the Alternative Minimum Tax on airport private activity bonds.  This allowed many airports to refinance old debt carrying high interest rates into debt with lower interest rates saving our industry millions of dollars in debt service while putting tens of thousands of Americans to work.  ACI-NA is pleased to issue this award to Senator Reid for his ongoing support of the aviation community.

“We are honored to award Senator Reid with this year’s Commissioners Congressional Leadership Award,” said Jim Trout, Chair of ACI-NA’s Commissioners Committee and Chairman of the Flathead Municipal Airport Authority in Montana.  “When we asked Senator Reid for his help in obtaining the AMT exemption on airport bonds, he committed to helping us.  As an industry, we could not ask for a better advocate in the Senate.”

ACI-NA will present the 2011 Commissioners Congressional Leadership Award to Senator Reid at the annual ACI-NA Commissioners Reception, on Tuesday, February 2, from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. EST in 562 Dirksen Senate Office Building on Capitol Hill. The reception is being held in conjunction with the 2011 ACI-NA/AAAE Washington Legislative Conference.
