Cooperation, Not Capitulation

In his remarks at the opening session of the 19th ACI World Annual Assembly in Kuala Lumpur, Jim Cherry, chairman of ACI World, commented that airports and airlines are facing a critical juncture with regard to their relationship with one another. Airports and airlines can either work together, or work in silos.

Although airports and airlines may disagree on several issues, the recent economic downturn felt throughout the world has wreaked havoc on both the airlines and airports. Consequently, rather than fostering this polarization, why not work together? With these tough times, comes a great opportunity for collaboration. “There’s nothing like an economic crisis to immediately remind us that we are all part of the same industry and share the same customers!” said Cherry.

Airports and airlines have already put their heads together on some very critical common issues: safety, security, information technology, etc. So why not continue the trend? For instance, as climate change becomes more and more of a hot issue, all industry stakeholders will be pressed to step up and do their part. This is just one of many examples where cooperation can exist.

According to Cherry, an industry working together as one could certainly make more strides than the actions of individual players. “We are entering a new era of cooperation in aviation,” said Cherry, “to the mutual benefit of all parties involved.”
