Bergen Offers Attendees Glimpse of the Future

There wasn’t an empty seat in the house for the keynote event this morning. Peter Bergen, CNN National Security Analyst and author, offered the crowd some very insightful information on where he thinks Al Qaeda–and affiliated movements–are positioned today. See blog.

Did You Know?

Keep Austin Weird

While in Austin you may notice bumper stickers proclaiming, Keep Austin Weird, or perhaps, Keep Austin Normal, or maybe Keep Austin Corporate. What’s the story? In recent years, many Austinites have also adopted the unofficial slogan Keep Austin Weird; this refers partly to the eclectic and progressive lifestyle of many Austin residents but is also the slogan for a campaign to preserve smaller local businesses and resist excessive commercialization. And, there are now rival slogans for those favoring a less eclectic Austin: Keep Austin Normal and Keep Austin Corporate, for those who want more big-box retailers.

Lights, Cameras, Action!

Airplane hangers at the former Mueller Airport have been leased since 2000 by the Austin Film Society and transformed into five studio production stages. Austin Studios have been used by small independent films as well as the large studios.

The 711-acre area that once housed the airport is to be transformed into a planned residential and commercial area. The new Mueller Community broke ground in 2007 and is expected to take at least 10 years to be fully developed.
