2003 Milestones
First Woman Elected to Chair of ACI-NA Board of Directors
(January 14, 2003) - ACI-NA members elected its 2003 board of directors, naming Gina Marie Lindsey, Director of the Aviation Division at the Port of Seattle, as the aviation association's 2003 chairman. She is the first woman to hold this post.
Airports Make Recommendations on FAA Reauthorization Bill to Congress (February 25, 2003) -- ACI-NA President David Z. Plavin testified before the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation's Aviation Subcommittee to provide airports’ recommendations for the 2003 FAA Reauthorization Bill. Plavin emphasized that in order to prepare for the increasing number of passengers who will be using the aviation system, as well as to address current airport safety and security needs, Congress needs to make changes in airports funding resources (AIP/PFCs/Airport Bonds), foster a partnership approach to enhance all airport operations especially aviation security, address the need for improvements in air service to small communities, and prevent future delays by increasing aviation capacity.
Cargo Grows by Almost 2 Percent in 2002, Passenger Traffic Falls
(August 8, 2003) - ACI-NA announced that more than 1.3 billion passengers traveled the skies in 2002. Passenger traffic dropped 2.6 percent in 2002, while total operations decreased 2.8 percent. The region remained strong for cargo, however, with a 1.7 percent increase in 2002.
Airports to Celebrate 100 Years of Flight
(Dec. 11, 2003) - On Dec. 17, North American airports will celebrate 100 years of manned flight through “Airport Customer Appreciation Day.” The aviation world has undergone momentous changes since the early days of flight and recent times have been particularly challenging for all of those in the industry. In the past few years alone, passengers have adjusted to new security requirements, the effects of airline mergers and bankruptcies, reductions in customer services, as well as the impacts of war and health crises (SARS). This event recognizes the contributions of the Wright Brothers and those who have developed it over the years.
