With Wildlife Database Open, ACI-NA Urges Clear Guidance

ACI-NA was recently informed that the Department of Transportation will provide public access to the Federal Aviation Administration National Wildlife Strike Database, following consideration of comments filed on the “Notice of Proposed Order Designating Information as Protected from Disclosure,” Docket No. FAA-2009-0245.

While ACI-NA did not take a position on the proposal, we believe it is important that FAA provide explanatory information to assist the public and media in using the data responsibly, with a clear understanding of what they do say and—more importantly—what they do not say about the hazards wildlife pose to aircraft operations at and near airports. This is important to ensure that airports can continue to focus their resources on effective, comprehensive wildlife hazard management programs to protect the safety of air passengers and our air transportation system.
